Non-Boring Environments that need Fantasy Representation

Tropical Rainforests

image

Scrubland/Dry Forests. For extra effect make them the sort that burn very often; some native plants never germinate until after a fire, and some animals not only rely on fire to smoke out prey, but may even start them themselves.

image
image

Savannas/Tropical Grasslands

image

Temperate Rainforests. I almost didn’t include this bc New Zealand is covered in them, and that’s where they filmed Lord of the Rings. But tbh, no one really knows about them, so it belongs here

image

Taiga Forests

image

Barren Tundra, perfect for some extreme seasonal dichotomy

image
image

Polar Ice Sheets

image

Desert-Grasslands (arguably the same as Scrubland but Australia’s good at adding its own twists)

image

Barren Desert

image

If you like Cacti, look at American Deserts like the Sonoran

image

Salt Flats

image

Soda Lakes and Alkaline Lakes

image

Madagascar’s Karst Limestone Formations

image

Madagascar’s Spiny Forests

image

Madagascar’s Baobab Forests

image

Madagascar’s Subhumid Forests (Madagascar is cool as hell ok)

image

Danxia Landforms

image

Badlands/Mountainous Deserts

image

Steppes and Highland Prairies

image

Flood Basalts

image
image

Newly-Formed Islands, still rife with Volcanic activity

image
image

Now for Underwater Environments, sure Coral Reefs are cool.

image

But there are SO MANY other kinds of environments for aquatic settings, it’s unbelievable:

Seaside Cliffs

image

Archipelagos. Not just Tropical Island chains like Polynesia (Moana anyone?) but also Coldwater Archipelagos like the Aleutians.

image
image

Tidal Flats

image

Bayous/Cypress Swamps

image
image

Tropical River Basins, AKA Seasonally Flooded Rainforests

image

Mangrove Swamps/Deltas/Beaches

image

Kelp Forests

image

The Open Ocean

image

Coastal Seabeds

image

Rocky Beaches with Tidepools

image

And there are a LOT more I could name but this post is already obscenely long as is, if you’d like to toss in your own go right ahead, but my point is if you limit yourself to European Deciduous Forests you’re a wimp.

my favorite thing about this post every time i see it is how all the environments are so breathtaking and striking, and then i see the sonoran desert one and it’s like… oh. neat. i grew up with those exact mountains in the background looming over us, and it’s just so fascinating to think about how there’s a person for whom that’s true about all of these. every fantastical and otherworldly environment is just someone else’s backyard. it’s so cool to bring it into perspective like that.

A lot of times, I feel like I’ll never get any better in my art. But then I look back through my binders of my old drawings…

square-stingray:

The first one here, is from 2012. I was 14 then.

{ “ what are arm joints?” }

These ones are from 2014.

Then 2015.

Slowly, you can see my style of drawing developing..

2016..

2017, first appearance of one of my webcomic characters.

and..  a few from this year, 2018..

and here, Compare the one from 6 years ago.

so, next time you think you’ll never get any better, remember this: progress doesn’t happen overnight. It happens over a course of years. but it does happen.

Keep drawing. you’ll get where you want to be soon enough, my friend.

Why Movies About College are Actually Full of Shit.

This is very important because my brother and I grew up thinking college was like this. Like we would live out a beer commercial.

And when I got to college and it DIDN’T happen, it stressed me out. I thought I was doing something wrong again. I had, apparently, messed up high school according to the media, and now college?! The supposed best time of my life?! It created a big depression, and living far from home made it worse as I had no friends or family I could immediately talk to. It took a long time for me to understand that movies and commercials and shows that portray college like that is complete and utter bullshit.

Also, a reminder:

Most Americans don’t have college degrees. Of the ones who do, tons of them don’t finish in four years.

Lots of people go to community colleges.

Lots of people live at their parents’ house while in school.

The TV and movie stereotype of college–even just the “everyone goes to college and lives in a dorm” thing–only a tiny minority of Americans actually live that out.

A lot of information about (American) High School and College living given from media is wrong but I also found out that some of it is just dated. Like, I thought that whole “popular girls = cheerleading squad” was a dumb cliche high school tv trope that just never dies (because literally anyone who passes try outs is chosen and NO the headcheerleader doesn’t run try outs to only let in her friends)

But then my mom told me in her day cheerleaders were chosen by vote. So literally popular = cheerleader and that’s where these tropes were born from, so apparently there was a grain of truth the whole time. Too bad that truth came from 35 years ago.

Also I can’t tell you how many times my HS teachers tried to scare us into believing our college professors would be a bunch of hard ass fire breathing dragons that are actively trying to get you kicked out of your program…only for most of them to be like “lol don’t feel like teaching today sooooo class is cancelled.”

my favorite Millennial Thing™ is when a group of us are standing around and talking and someone asks a question that no one knows the answer to and suddenly it’s a race to get out your phone and google it and be the first to know, and then someone starts reading the Wikipedia article about the thing aloud to everyone else, and what started as a casual conversation is now A Learning Opportunity and we all walk away a little more knowledgeable about a random topic

Like, Boomers hate when we do that, but I think it’s one of the best things about us.

So long as we have internet or a cell signal, all of the world’s collective knowledge is at our fingertips, and damned if we aren’t going to use it.

My dad always get mad when I do this. He’s always like “We didn’t need to know.” That makes no sense to me. Why would that make me ignore my ability to learn something? I don’t always *need* to know but that doesn’t mean I’m going to pass up an opportunity to learn something new.

Why carry a supercomputer around in your pocket if you’re not gonna use it?

Let me tell you about

The 1973 Levi’s Gremlin.

Looks like just another AMC Gremlin, yeah? Well, notice the Levi’s logo on the front fender just behind the wheel well, and you know that when you get in this car, you’re in for something very… special.

Your eyes are not deceiving you. The seats and the trunk are upholstered in GENUINE LEVI’S DENIM, complete with bronze stitching. This is not some ironic custom job from recent times, either; this was a real option offered by AMC in 1973.

And people thought it was a good idea, even!

JEATS

Thats it, close the meme. It’s all done

Do you ever think about how sperm don’t work right at body temperature and that’s why males have external testicles? Design-wise that is such a huge risk to take. Your most important organ is swinging free outside your body, vulnerable to injury or attack. All because one (1) type of cell, your fucking gametes for christ’s sake, cannot function at the normal body temperature of the organism they belong to. What the fuck. I never want to hear a man try and say females are biologically inferior ever again.

While I’m at it also they have to share one hole that they both pee and have sex out of. That’s fucking gross and unsanitary. Everytime a man cums in you you’re also getting all the pee that was in his urethra enjoy that thought ladies. You know how many holes birds have? One. They pee, poop and have sex all in the same hole it’s called the cloaca. You know how many holes women have? Three. Because we evolved one. Evolution-wise, men fall somewhere between a chicken and a human female. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.
