Just learned that my Palestinian friend, who was going there on a student visa, has been detained by Israel for the past six days, and I’m so fucking livid

Here are the details of the story:

And here’s the gofundme for her legal expenses, which are likely going to add up:

https://www.gofundme.com/lara-alqasem-legal-fund

Lara Alqasem, a 22-year-old U.S. citizen, was denied entry into Israel on October 2nd and has been detained in Ben Gurion Airport since then, despite having received a student visa from the Israeli Consul in Miami, FL.

Alqasem was traveling to Israel to pursue a Masters in transitional justice at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. However, Alqasem was racially profiled upon arrival, and has been litigating through the Israeli courts to be permitted to enter the country and pursue her studies.

By litigating, and therefore challenging the oppressive policies of the Israeli government, Alqasem is acquiring steep court and attorney fees. Alqasem’s case has ramifications beyond Alqasem herself. Please consider making a contribution to Alqasem’s mounting legal fees. Not only will you be helping Lara Alqasem pursue her education, you will be supporting an effort to resist an unjust system–which will impact many more.

The Cosplayer was wearing a gas mask, helmet, armour and bullet belt. He was also carrying a New Republic of California flag.
People thought he had a bomb strapped to his back but it turned out to be several Pringles cans painted silver.

Police were hiding in bushes and behind their cars with long guns drawn. Happened in Grande Prairie, Alberta. (April 14, 2017)

A reminder to all you cosplayers out there: be careful how you dress when in the general public. Not everyone is savvy to semi-obscure characters/designs.

This, a thousand times this.

Take your mask off, bag your props, and move with people.

Every post apocalyptic cosplay group needs a Safety Naruto. The Safety Naruto will signal to ordinary people that yes this is indeed a costume.

The concept of a Safety Naruto is fucking hilarious

Just like a buddy system except it’s a bunch of people with prop guns or bombs are each assigned a Naruto

Found this reddit post. This kinda makes me feel better. And it’s something I think about sometimes because I always feel like regardless of how hard I work on something I don’t get anywhere.

Nice summary. If you’re curious, the anon here is referring to studies over the last decade that have pointed to major impacts on pattern separation with depression, and how depression can have major impacts on nonsynaptic plasticity

Psychology is amazing folks and more of it needs to be common knowledge

YOUR BRAIN IS AN ORGAN AND DEPRESSION IS A REAL PHYSICAL THING THAT HAPPENS TO IT. THIS IS REALLY SUPER IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER.
